Monitoring VPN performance

To monitor VPN connections and performance, the user should create and assign to a remote worker’s agent at least two targets:

  • External resource/website - This target will point to an external, Internet website or resource and should include one ping test.

  • Internal resource/website - This target will point to an internal, VPN-accessible-only resource and should include one ping test.

By comparing the ping performance (RTT and packet loss) of the external resource with the internal one, the user can infer whether the VPN is adding performance degradation that could impair the end-user experience.

It’s also possible to compare throughput on and off the VPN tunnel by comparing two test measurements:

  1. Off-VPN: a network speed test, using an Internet server, and

  2. On-VPN: with an iPerf test, using a NetBeez network agent or on-premise iPerf server.
